Liberty London

I was scurrying from the tube yesterday to the Bazaar office, feeling rushed and slightly over-wrought after delays on the Victoria line and a claustrophobic tube carriage, when I looked up from the grey pavement to the blue sky, and noticed a golden ship on top of Liberty... All these years of living in London, and I'd never seen that beautiful boat before.

Isn't it wonderful, those moments of discovery in a place you know so well? Some friends and I have taken to walking around the Pike Place Market for an early morning breakfast. I've been coming to the market for twenty-five years, and every time I spot something new I'd never noticed before. You have to remind yourself to look down, sometimes, or up, as in your case. Or follow a different path to see something new behind a bend in the road...

You are so right -- those moments of surprise in familiar places.

I believe the Liberty building is made from the timbers of a ship (or perhaps more than one ship, I can't remember the details). Perhaps your golden ship (which I've never spotted either) relates to that?

That's intriguing -- I never knew the Liberty provenance until now. Thank you...

According to good old Wikipedia it was built in 1920 in the Tudor Revival Style using the timbers from HMS Impregnable and HMS Hindustan and the front of the shop is the same length as the Hindustan.
next time we're in London I shall6 look for the ship!

Was doing light research on the Liberty building which directed me to your blog, Justine. Ever a fan and nice to connect here in comments. Am just overjoyed with the work of Bazaar Art in UK, just fantastic, have been following along there. Yourself and Justine Simons being two women I admire very much. Keep on! Sorry, this probably not place to blubber on, just happy to land upon your blog.
