Fireworks in the rain?

6pm, and I've just got home -- did anyone else get caught in the deluges of this afternoon? -- with a bunch of beautiful white roses. Anyway, someone is letting off fireworks nearby -- slightly damp squibs, if I'm honest... Why, I wonder? Is it a reaction to the gloom of January? Or a local festival of the light? Very odd...

It has been raining steadily all week (after a night of snow on Tuesday).

I love white roses (indeed, all fragrant white flowers); I bought a huge one the other day, and its scent followed me like an evanescent cloud all the way home...

I wasn't organized enough this year to force hyacinth bulbs, but the cut blossoms are already appearing at my favorite flower shop. Next year I'll try to get some hyacinth vases...I've been reading Elspeth Thompson and Ros Badger's book Homemade, and am getting inspired...sooner than we think it will be spring, and elderflower time again.

The days are so miserable at the moment, so anything to brighten the mood sounds like a good idea to me!

I googled festivals on 14th Jan and there is a Hindu festival called Pongal. So, it could be that, or, it could be people using up their new year left overs on a grey January night, or someone's birthday, or...

Kairu, I like your new photograph. Lilacs in May: please let there be lilacs very soon...

The brightest thing I've seen of late is a sparking cat throwing itself through the catflap (like a firework?) The rain sits on his fur and glistens beautifully in the light (electric light) Shame he has to share it with me by rubbing over my black trouser legs!
